Hayley Lawrence |
Hayley Lawrence worked as a lawyer in a commercial firm in Sydney before trading city life for the coast when she married a pilot. Hayley and her husband had many adventures while she worked for a small law firm on the Mid-North Coast of NSW. They now have five vivacious daughters who continue to bring immense joy and utter mayhem to their life. Despite leaving legal work, Hayley could not leave behind the stories of the people she’d encountered. They are stories that provoke questions about the nature of humanity, and it’s these questions that haunt her novels. Hayley's fifth YA novel, What They Told Me, is a very personal story about her work and home life, as well as the places she has loved, and is due for release in February 2024. Other novels by Hayley include The Other Side of Tomorrow, Inside the Tiger, Ruby Tuesday and Skin Deep.

Workshop
Exploring Serious Subject Matter in Young Adult Literature.
In this workshop, Hayley will share how writers find inspiration for the themes in their stories. She will also explore the value of writing in the digital age and how we avoid the risk of losing it as a storytelling medium.
In her YA novels, Hayley has posed questions about difficult themes, including death penalty politics, sexual consent, body image, grief, parental separation and teenage mortality. Hayley will share the inspiration behind some of her stories and the challenges she has faces in creating content that is both accessible and relatable to a young adult readership. During her workshop, Hayley will engage participants in activities designed to unlock their own creative flow, to spark ideas and generate thoughtful discussions.
